By sustainability we mean meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Modeled after the workings of the natural systems we are a part of, sustainability is balance and equity over time. Roughly, sustainability is an equilibrium where resources are used at rates equal to their renewal rates, birth rates equal death rates, investment rates equal depreciation rates, etc. As a value, it's an extension of the Golden Rule through time, so that you do unto future generations, in addition to your own, as you would have them do unto you. It means taking stock of our current situation honestly, and developing as communities in ways that make sense ecologically and economically now and for the long term.
